Houses (Bhavas)5 min read · Updated 2026-06
Some houses carry far more weight than others. Learn why the Kendra and Trikona houses are the engines of strength and fortune in a chart.
The Kendras, or angular houses, are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth. They are the load-bearing pillars of the chart, governing the body, home, partnership and career. Planets placed in Kendras gain strength to deliver their results and shape the structure of life.
Vishnu is said to reside in the Kendras, lending them a protective, sustaining quality. A planet that is strong by sign and sits in a Kendra is positioned to act powerfully.
The Trikonas, or trinal houses, are the first, fifth and ninth. They are the most auspicious houses in the chart, governing the self, creative merit and intelligence (5th), and fortune, dharma and grace (9th). Lakshmi is associated with the Trikonas, so they carry blessing and good fortune.
The ninth house in particular is the seat of luck and divine grace, and a strong ninth is one of the surest signs of a fortunate life.
Because Kendras supply strength and Trikonas supply fortune, the union of a Kendra lord with a Trikona lord creates a Rajayoga — a combination for rise, authority and success. This is one of the foundational rules of predictive Jyotish.
The first house is unique in being both a Kendra and a Trikona, which is part of why the Lagna and its lord are so central to every reading.
The Kendra or angular houses are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th, the structural pillars of the chart.
The Trikona or trinal houses are the 1st, 5th and 9th, the most auspicious houses for fortune and dharma.
Their combination forms a Rajayoga, joining strength with fortune to bestow success, authority and rise in life.
