The twelve houses divide your chart into every area of life — self, wealth, family, love, career and more. Here is a clear tour of all twelve Bhavas.
If the signs describe how planets behave, the houses, or Bhavas, describe where in life those energies play out. The chart is divided into twelve houses counted from the Lagna, and each governs a cluster of life themes. Reading a Kundali is largely a matter of asking which planets sit in, rule, or aspect the house you care about.
The houses also have a hierarchy of importance. Angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are the strongest pillars; trinal houses (1, 5, 9) are the most auspicious; and the dusthanas (6, 8, 12) carry difficulty and growth through challenge.
The first house (Tanu Bhava) is the self, body, personality and overall vitality. The second (Dhana Bhava) covers wealth, savings, family, speech and food. The third (Sahaja Bhava) rules courage, siblings, communication, short journeys and effort. The fourth (Sukha Bhava) governs home, mother, property, vehicles, education and inner happiness.
These early houses set up the foundations of a life: who you are, what you own, how you act, and where you find security.
The fifth (Putra Bhava) rules children, creativity, intelligence, romance and past-life merit. The sixth (Ari Bhava) covers enemies, debt, disease, service and daily work. The seventh (Kalatra Bhava) is marriage, partnership and business alliances. The eighth (Ayur Bhava) governs longevity, transformation, inheritance, the occult and sudden events.
This middle band of houses brings the great relationships and crises of life — love, conflict, marriage and deep change.
The ninth (Dharma Bhava) rules fortune, father, guru, higher learning, religion and long journeys. The tenth (Karma Bhava) governs career, status, authority and public life. The eleventh (Labha Bhava) covers gains, income, friends and fulfilled desires. The twelfth (Vyaya Bhava) rules loss, expenditure, foreign lands, sleep, isolation and spiritual liberation (moksha).
Together the houses map the entire field of human experience, from the body in the first to the soul's release in the twelfth.
The angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) form the strongest pillars, and the trinal houses (1, 5, 9) are the most auspicious for fortune and dharma.
The 6th, 8th and 12th houses are called dusthanas. They carry difficulty, debt, transformation and loss, but also growth and spiritual progress.
