You do not opt into a dasha and you cannot pause it. A Saturn period and a Jupiter period ask completely different things of you, and reward completely different behaviour. Spending a Jupiter period playing defence is a loss you never see on a balance sheet. Most people find out which period they were in only after it has ended.
