The Lagna, or Ascendant, is the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It becomes the cusp of the first house and the starting point from which all twelve houses are counted. Because the Earth rotates once a day, the Lagna moves through all twelve signs every 24 hours, changing sign roughly every two hours.
The first house and its lord describe the physical body, appearance, temperament, vitality and the broad arc of life. Two people born on the same day in different hours can have very different Lagnas and therefore very different charts, which is why the Ascendant is treated as the spine of the Kundali.
The planet that rules the rising sign is the Lagna lord, and its placement is one of the first things an astrologer studies. A strong, well-placed Lagna lord supports health, confidence and a clear sense of self; a weak or afflicted one can mean obstacles to self-expression and physical vigour.
For example, an Aries Lagna is ruled by Mars, so Mars's house, sign and aspects colour the native's drive and assertiveness. A Libra Lagna is ruled by Venus, lending refinement and a relational focus to the personality.
