Rahu and Ketu are the north and south lunar nodes — the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. They are not physical bodies but are treated as full grahas. They always sit exactly opposite one another and move in retrograde motion through the zodiac.
In myth, they are the severed head (Rahu) and body (Ketu) of a demon who stole the nectar of immortality. This origin colours their meaning: Rahu is the insatiable head of desire, Ketu the headless body of detachment.
Rahu signifies worldly ambition, obsession, foreign things, technology, illusion (maya), unconventional paths and sudden expansion. It amplifies whatever it touches and craves the experiences of the house and sign it occupies. Rahu can bring spectacular rise or dizzying confusion, often both.
A strong Rahu can grant fame, material success and mastery of the modern and the unusual, while an afflicted Rahu can bring addiction, deception or scattered, restless desire.
Ketu signifies spirituality, liberation, past-life mastery, sudden loss, and a piercing, intuitive intelligence. Where Ketu sits, the native already has skill but feels strangely dissatisfied, as if they have done it all before. It dissolves attachment to the affairs of its house.
Ketu's gifts are inward — insight, moksha, healing and detachment — but its losses on the material plane can feel abrupt. Many spiritual seekers have a prominent Ketu.
