On Karwa Chauth, married women keep a nirjala fast — without food or water — from sunrise until the moon rises, praying for their husbands' long life and well-being. The evening puja, the Karwa katha and the first sight of the moon through a sieve are the heart of the day, so the moonrise time for your own city is the number that matters most.
Karwa Chauth is kept on the day Chaturthi holds at moonrise — the moment the fast is broken — which is why the date abroad can fall a day earlier than in India.
The fast begins at sunrise (many take sargi, a pre-dawn meal from the mother-in-law, before it). In the evening the women gather for the puja and the Karwa Chauth katha. When the moon rises, it is offered arghya (water) and viewed through a sieve, and the fast is broken from the husband's hands.
Moonrise depends on a city's longitude and latitude, so it varies by up to an hour between Indian cities alone — and abroad it can even fall on a different date. The time here is when the Moon's upper edge clears a level horizon; buildings, hills or cloud can delay the actual sighting by a few minutes.
