Vijayadashami marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana and of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura — the triumph of dharma over adharma. It closes Navratri, and its Vijay muhurat is held to be one of the most auspicious moments of the year for beginning anything new.
Dussehra is kept on the day Dashami holds during Aparahna, the fourth of the day's five parts.
The day's worship — Shami puja, Aparajita puja and Shastra puja — is done in Aparahna, the afternoon. Within it, the eleventh muhurta of the day is the Vijay muhurat, 'the time of victory', traditionally chosen to start a journey, a venture or a new study.
North India burns effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakarna after the Ram Lila; Bengal immerses the Durga idols; Mysuru holds its royal procession; in the south, tools and books are worshipped. Across India it is also a day to buy gold, vehicles and property.
